Professor T. Oates Frostauger is the author of the article "Some Calm Observations on a Few Lettered Tiles and Old Bones" printed in Sherds that began to question the validity of Saint Floradora. A professor at Cambridge, he was in 1939 the Hercules Furens Visiting Lecturer at the University of the Funicular (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 81). He later penned the taunting article "How Would You Know?" in the TLS in response to another article entitled "The Brothel as Sanctuary" (Saint, 82).

Inspiration[]

Titus Oates (1649-1705) was an English clergyman who fabricated the "Popish Plot", a supposed Catholic conspiracy to kill King Charles II[1]. Oates alleged that there existed an extensive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate Charles II, accusations that led to the executions of at least 22 men. Eventually Oates' intricate web of accusations fell apart, leading to his arrest and conviction for perjury[2].

An auger is a tool, like a drill bit, used for boring holes in soil, wood, or ice; presumably a frostauger would be used on ice[3].
