South Bend is a city in north-central Indiana, on the Saint Joseph River near its southernmost bend, from which it derives its name. It is the fourth-largest city in Indiana, serving as the economic and cultural hub of Northern Indiana. It is home to the University of Notre Dame.

John Bellairs began his undergraduate career in 1955. As a senior, he was a member of the Bookmen literary club and was on the staff of the student magazine, the Scholastic, where we see some of his earliest written work. Bellairs also took part in the nationally televised College Bowl program during his senior year, where he recited Middle English on national television. Bellairs graduated in 1959 with his bachelor’s degree in English with plans for graduate school in Chicago.
