Saint Frognall and Companions is a church, location unknown, where both Mrs. Modine Clapp and her mother have had the same pews for twenty-five years (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 47).
Inspiration[]
Frognall is the name of a small village in Lincolnshire, England[1], as well as Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776- 1847) an English bibliographer and founder of the first book club, the Roxburghe[2]. Frognal is an area of northwest London[3]. No word on whether the name - with one or two Ls - belongs to a saint or not.
There are a number of people venerated as saints within the Christian Church who are named only as Companions of another named saint[4]. When martyrs met their fate with a band of anonymous or less well-known supporters, these “humble spear-carriers for the Lord[5]” are often memorialized in the phrase “and companions.
