Port Royal was a village in Jamaica whose infamous 1692 earthquake Johnny reads about (The Wrath of the Grinning Ghost, 36-7).

Port Royal is a village located at the end of the Palisadoes at the mouth of the Kingston Harbor, in southeastern Jamaica. Founded in 1518 by the Spanish, it was once the largest city in the Caribbean, functioning as the center of shipping and commerce in the Caribbean Sea by the latter half of the 17th century.  It was destroyed by an earthquake on June 7, 1692, which had an accompanying tsunami.

The earthquake caused most of the city to sink below sea level and about 2,000 people died as a result of the earthquake and the following tsunami. Two-thirds of the town slipped into the Caribbean Sea and whole streets of taverns, inns, and stores remain under thirty feet of water. Today it is an important underwater archaeological site.

Severe hurricanes have regularly damaged it. Another severe earthquake occurred in 1907[1].
