Monday's Cigar Store was a business in Hoosac, Minnesota, owned and operated by Howard Monday. Despite its name it was in fact a saloon: "it was called a cigar store because nice people in Hoosac didn’t run saloons and the Mondays wanted to be nice people" (The Treasure of Alpheus Winterborn, 4).

The business is modeled after the Elk Cigar Store in Marshall, that was operated by Frank Bellairs, John's father, for 16 years (c.1940-56).

The Cigar Store became a Hardware Store in the 1980 made-for-television adaptation - rather than explaining to viewers why something called a cigar store in fact sold booze.
