The lamassu is an Assyrian protective deity in the form of a "winged bull" that Johnny, Fergie, and Professor Childermass see a statue of in the British Museum (The Chessmen of Doom, 150).

The lamassu was a protective deity of the Babylonian people and their rulers, often placed in pairs at entrances as a sign of power and to guard against approaching evils. Depicted as a winged bull or lion with eagle's wings and human head, when viewed from the front it appears to be standing still but walking when viewed from the side. Notable surviving figures exist as bas-relief and statues at the British Museum in London and the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago[1].
