John Bellairs Wiki

Gary is a city in northwest Indiana, the seat of Lake County, Indiana, located in the southeastern portion of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located approximately 25 miles from downtown Chicago.

During his undergraduate years John Bellairs passed through Gary as he traveled between South Bend and Chicago.  Following his graduation from the University of Chicago in the summer of 1960, Bellairs would teach at the Gary Extension campus of Indiana University in his first teaching role.

Residences[]

It is not believed that Bellairs ever lived in the city but rather commuted as needed to fulfill his teaching assignments (see Residences in Indiana).

Bellairs Corpus[]

  • Gary is not known as the most alluring or picturesque place in the country: notice Bellairs’s mild disdain for the area of northern Indiana in his description of the Hagway in The Pedant and the Shuffly.
