The Church Dormant is a concept spoken about Ercolaneo Clottovecchio at Vatican III and later promoted by Monsignor Gobart (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 89). The concept is for the more "rambunctious members of the church...and those...with overactive imaginations and chronic doubts to go into a sort of spiritual hibernation" and "sit tight" until Judgement Day.
Inspiration[]
This is a spoof on the three states of the Church[1]:
- The Church Militant: Christians on earth who struggle as soldiers of Christ against sin and the devil.
- The Church Penitent: Christians presently in Purgatory.
- The Church Triumphant: Christians who have the beatific vision and are in Heaven.
Author T. D. O'Donoghue wrote of the Church Dormant in 1924, citing it "merely a pathological condition of the Church Militant."[2]
