"When Lewis picked his cards up, he noticed that they were old and worn. Most of the corners were missing. But on each faded blue back was a round golden seal with an Aladdin's lamp in the middle. Above and below the seal were the words: CAPHARNAUM COUNTY MAGICIANS SOCIETY."--(The House With a Clock in its Walls)

If New Zebedee is a Boom Town of the ethereal and eerie, it has its guardians in the form of the Capharnaum County Magician's Society. This is just as well; they protect the world from malevolent forces that seek to destroy or subjugate it, and they'd love to establish a beachhead in New Zebedee.

Members Past and Present:

Lucius Mickleberry, Former President

Lucius Mickleberry was (from the perspective of Jonathan Barnavelt and Mrs. Zimmerman, a legendary president of the order and the leading sorceror of New Zebedee. He was kind and generous and possessed many valuable magical objects he willed to Jonathan upon his death. (This is yet another clue that despite his blustering and blowing about being a cheap ol' parlor magician, Jonathan is actually quite important among the Society...and perhaps not as low-powered as he would have people believe.) Before his retirement, Mickleberry managed to put down 'some pretty nasty sorcery' (The Doom of the Haunted Opera).

Current President

Mrs. Zenobia Weatherly was the current president of the Society and lived on West River Avenue. Her phone number was 707. The evil magic of Vanderhelm hid her and her house from the world in DOOM, but a little neighbor boy named Tommy remembered an old lady with gray hair, living in a house that was a big brick place with a tower.

Treasurer

Mr. Plum

Howard and Walter were otherwise unknown members tasked by Mrs. Zimmerman to make a subcommittee studying an important problem in BRIDGE.

Mildred Jaeger was a pleasant, but slightly unfocused magician with very little power. Her spells could backfire on her--possibly because she would break up her spells with 'oh dears'. Her wand was a treasured wooden spoon as she always felt more confident with cooking than with magic. Around her magic can...get a little odd.

A Group Effort

The Society banded together to protect the world from a ghastly comet that would have destroyed much of the world in The Beast Under the Wizard's Bridge.
